Changing your dog’s food diet is
something that you don’t want to do regularly but sometimes it is an essential
change. Knowing where to start can be overwhelming, however, we have some tips
on how you can easily change your dog’s dog food diet.
Making a change to your dog’s dog food diet can often be difficult but sometimes can’t be helped. There may be several reasons as to why you are switching your dog’s diet.
If you are looking to change their dog food diet, it is important that you do it gradually. Suddenly changing your dog’s diet could cause an upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhoea.
You can do this over a week by
mixing your old and new food, gradually increasing the new food, and decreasing
the old. A good dog
food diet transition should look like the diagram below. However, all
dogs are different, and it cannot always change as easily.
When you are changing dog food diet, it is important to monitor your dog’s behaviour and the quantity and quality of their stool. This can be a good indicator as to how well your dog is getting on with their new food or not. Minor changes in stool colour and consistency is normal, however, major changes can indicate a problem that may need to be addressed with your vet.
Once the transition is complete,
it is also important to keep an extra-close eye on your dog’s weight and body
condition score. If your dog shows any signs such as, changes in appetite,
vomiting or diarrhoea, you should proceed with the change more slowly. The PDSA also have some
