Cats are very different to dogs in so many ways. While a dog will shower you with affection all day every day, cats are a lot harder to please. They often only give you affection when they want it and may take a lot of time to warm to someone. They often seem grumpy, distant, and sometimes very rude; however, there can be a reason for this…
Cats love to be in control and get what they want when they want it. People who love cats often tend to pick them up or hold them on their knee, which not all cats like, as it can make them feel restrained and not in control.
Cats love it when people play hard to get, showing them no attention, which is what a lot of people who don’t like cats tend to do.
Studies have shown that cats love people who hate cats because they are reluctant to make a fuss about them. The main reason they approach the person who doesn’t like cats is because they don’t find them threatening, making them feel secure enough to come up and greet the human. If you really don’t like cats, it is best to act extra friendly and they’ll soon run off!
If you are trying to win a cat over, it is best not to stare at them as they see this as a sign of dominance and even aggression among some cats. Also, make sure you ignore them as this will give them the control and independence they want and need.
Where Not to Stroke a Cat
When stroking a cat, it is important to be aware of their red, yellow and green areas.
- “Red Area” - These are areas that they hate being touched, these can include the base of their tail and stomach.
- “Yellow Area” - Usually, their tail, legs and along their backs, which are less preferred areas than the face for example.
- “Green Area” - These can be the base of their ears and under the chin. People who aren’t used to cats will stick to the “green areas”.
